Gravel Calculator

Enter the area and depth to see the gravel needed.

Work out how much gravel, shingle or aggregate to order. Enter the area to cover and the depth, and the calculator gives the volume in cubic metres and the approximate weight in tonnes (gravel weighs roughly 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre). A 40 to 50 mm depth is typical for paths, with a little more for driveways.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should gravel be?

About 50 mm for paths and borders, and 50 to 75 mm for driveways over a firm sub-base. Too thin and the ground shows through; too thick and it is hard to walk on.

How many bulk bags is a tonne?

A standard bulk bag holds around 800 kg to 1 tonne, so one tonne is roughly one bulk bag. Suppliers vary, so check the weight when ordering.
